At Knapping Dragon Photography, we believe in capturing more than just images; we capture passions, stories, and moments that define who you are. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Kyle, a high school senior whose love for Minecraft was not just a hobby but a part of his identity. Here's how we turned his passion into a photographic art piece.
Pose 1: The Reach
The first pose was all about capturing the moment Kyle was about to dive back into his world of Minecraft. I suspended a game controller in mid-air using simple fishing line, creating the illusion of it floating. The lighting was set to mimic the glow from a TV screen - cool, vibrant, and inviting. As Kyle reached for the controller, the colored lights cast a surreal mood, making it seem as though the game was calling to him. This setup not only highlighted his love for the game but also captured his eagerness to escape into another world.
Pose 2: Light Art & The Game Portal
For the second pose, we experimented with Light Art Photography, specifically light painting. Using a plexitool, I crafted a pattern that mirrored the look of shattered glass, symbolizing the barrier between reality and the virtual world of Minecraft. Kyle was posed in a way that his silhouette was visible but not fully lit; I used dim lighting to keep him just on the edge of darkness. This approach created a dramatic effect, suggesting Kyle was being pulled into the game through the TV screen. It was a nod to those moments when gamers feel completely absorbed by their virtual adventures.
Pose 3: Trapped in the Game
The final pose was the most abstract and required some post-production magic. Here, Kyle was entirely silhouetted against a backdrop that suggested the inside of a television screen. In editing, I pixelated the image to give it a digital, blocky feel, reminiscent of Minecraft's graphics. To enhance the theme of being 'trapped in the game,' I added green flares in Kyle's hands using software, as attempts to capture this effect in-camera resulted in overexposure. This image truly encapsulated the concept of living within the game, blending Kyle's real self with his virtual avatar.
Conclusion
These three poses not only celebrated Kyle's love for Minecraft but also showcased the creative portrait sessions that Knapping Dragon Photography does best. We thrive on transforming ordinary interests into extraordinary art pieces. By integrating elements of Kyle's passion directly into the photography session, we didn't just take pictures; we told a story, created an experience, and produced art that resonates with his personality.
If you or someone you know has a passion they want to see come to life through photography, let's collaborate to make something unique. Whether it's gaming, music, reading, or any other interest, I'm here to turn your story into a visual masterpiece.
