Tips For High School Seniors Making Your Senior Portraits Unforgettable

Hey everyone, it's Knapping Dragon Photography here to help you make your senior year memorable with some amazing senior portraits! Here are some tips to ensure your photos are not only a reflection of your personality but also stand out from the crowd:

1. Understand Your Style

Your senior photos should be an extension of your personal style. Are you into vintage looks, or are you more modern and edgy? Think about what clothes you feel most like yourself in. Remember, these photos are about you! If you're unsure, I offer a short questionnaire to help us understand your interests, fashion preferences, and personality. Filling this out will allow us to tailor the session to match your unique vibe, from posing to lighting.

2. Location, Location, Location

The backdrop of your photos can significantly influence the feel of the images. Urban settings, natural landscapes, or perhaps your favorite part of town? We can scout locations that resonate with your personal story or aesthetic. If there's a particular place that holds meaning for you, let's capture it! Keep in mind however for glamour sessions some of the poses will have to be done indoors in an area with windows covered so I can control the lighting or as we get into the warmer months a night session in complete dark. This ensures we do not get over exposed pictures when we move on to colored lighting and Light Art Photography portion of the session. We can do this at my home studio or I can set up an indoor location of your choice.

3. Timing is Everything

Light changes throughout the day, and different times offer different moods. Golden hour (just before sunset) gives a warm, glowing light that's perfect for a magical feel, while overcast days provide soft, diffused light excellent for more dramatic or moody shots. We'll use this knowledge to our advantage to get the best shots. However as we move into Spring and Summer months and weather gets warmer, shooting your portraits at night means we do not need an indoor place to set up for the colors and Light Art and it will give the rest of your pictures a unique vibe as most photographers prefer to use the natural sunlight, Knapping Dragon Photography is well adept in shooting stunning portraits with little to no natural light as a majority of what we do is done mostly in the dark.

4. Bring Props or Items That Define You

Maybe you're an athlete, a musician, or an avid reader. Bringing along items that showcase these aspects of your life can make your photos uniquely yours. Whether it's your guitar, a favorite book, or sports gear, these props can add depth to your photos.

5. Posing Tips

Posing can feel awkward but here's the trick - we'll move you into natural poses that feel right for you. We'll discuss your answers from the questionnaire to decide on poses that reflect your personality. Whether you're more animated or prefer a calm, collected look, we'll find what works best.

6. Hair and Makeup

If you're not skilled in hair and makeup, consider hiring a professional for the day. It can elevate your photos to another level. However, if you prefer your natural look, we can work with that too. Remember, the goal is for you to feel comfortable and beautiful.

7. Comfort is Key

We'll take breaks if needed, and the session will be paced so you feel comfortable, not rushed. Your comfort translates into natural expressions and more authentic photos.

This is the golden rule. Your photos should be a celebration of who you are at this moment in your life. We'll work together to capture images that you'll look back on with pride and joy.
